Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos. Exclusively created for President Fidel Castro in 1966, Cohiba and El Laguito (most famous factory today) were kept secret. For more then a decade the Cohiba was reserved as gifts for heads of state and diplomats.
Since 1982, the Cohiba is available in limited quantities on the open market.
The name Cohiba is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves, which were smoked by these natives of Cuba. The Columbus report testifies those as the first known form of the cigar.
The leaves of the Cohiba are the cream of the crop from the five best Vegas Fina de Primera in the areas of San Juan y Martinez and San Luis from the Vuelta Abajo region.
It is unique among the Habanos that two of the filler leaves of Cohiba, seco and ligero, are fermented a third time in barrels, which gives the blend a more smoother flavor.
These cigars are offered in varnished boxes of 10 pieces. Striking at the Piramides Extra is a newly designed cigar ring. The rings based on the super-premium line of cigars Cohiba Behike was upgraded by certain holograms and security features that make it difficult to counterfeit. As for all cigars by Cohiba for the production of Piramides extras are used only selected tobacco leaves of the five best plantations in the Vuelta Abajo As usual in this manufacture two of the three filler tobaccos (Seco and Ligero) run through a third fermentation in barrels. Thanks to this process, a special aroma and taste typical Cohiba are achieved. These cigars are made from the best torcedores the highest category in manufactures El Laguito and H. Upmann in Havana.
