Since 1982, the Cohiba is available in limited quantities on the open market.
The name Cohiba is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves, which were smoked by these natives of Cuba. The Columbus report testifies to these winding as the first known form of the cigar.
The leaves of the Cohiba are the elite of the elite of the five best Vegas Fina de Primera in the areas of San Juan y Martinez and San Luis from the Vuelta Abajo region.
It is unique among the Habanos that two of the insert sheets of Cohiba, seco and ligero, are fermented a third time in barrels, which gives the blend a more softer flavor.
